Punk Farm

By Jarrett J. Krosoczka 40 pages Children

Danny Says

I just met Jarrett at the marvelous Shenandoah University Children’s Literature Conference in lovely Winchester, Virginia, and Jarrett’s speech prompted me to read everything he has written. Besides his beautiful, funny and endearing picture books, he is also the author of the popular Lunch Lady series. I’ll just flat-out recommend everything he has written, as I know you won’t be disappointed with the stories, and certainly not the artwork.

Your children will delight at this companion to the Caldecott winner Swamp Angel (wow – it won that award nearly 20 years ago). Wonderful tall tale storytelling by Issacs accompanied by Paul Zelinsky’s extraordinary illustrations.

Ling & Ting: Not Exactly the Same! (Passport to Reading Level 3)

By Grace Lin 48 pages Children

Danny Says

Maybe since my children are half Chinese I am drawn to books about Chinese Americans. Then again, any beginning reader will enjoy Lin’s tales of twins who are not as alike as they may appear.
Binky the Space Cat (A Binky Adventure)

Binky the Space Cat (A Binky Adventure)

By Ashley Spires 64 pages Children

Danny Says

To me, the mark of a truly great children’s book is whether mom and dad laugh as much as the kids during the read aloud. This is a book parents will surely appreciate as they read to their little ones before bedtime.
Daddies Do It Different

Daddies Do It Different

By Alan Lawrence Sitomer 40 pages Children

Danny Says

I actually got this book when I heard a teacher gripe that it is full of gender stereotypes. Really? I managed to read the entire book with my three kids, and we all managed to giggle and point out what applies to mommy and what applies to me. It is a fun children’s book, for crying out loud! Ladies – why not buy this for your hubbies and encourage them to read it to your children. It’s filled with laughs and fun illustrations by Abby Carter.
I Want My Hat Back

I Want My Hat Back

By Jon Klassen 40 pages Children

Danny Says

I just love this funny story of a bear in search of his missing hat. I must confess, though, that I seem to enjoy it more than my children.
The Juice Box Bully: Empowering Kids to Stand Up for Others

The Juice Box Bully: Empowering Kids to Stand Up for Others

By Bob Sornson,Maria Dismondy 32 pages Children

Danny Says

If you’re a parent, you’re going to have to deal with the bullying of your children sooner or later (or, worse – your child may be the bully). How about nipping it in the bud by looking at a positive way to remedy bullying? This book is THE BEST and most practical book on bullying that I have read. A MUST PURCHASE for parents, teachers and school administrators. In fact, I just handed a copy to my children’s elementary school principal.
Goodnight iPad: a Parody for the next generation

Goodnight iPad: a Parody for the next generation

By Ann Droyd 32 pages Children

Danny Says

With apologies to Margaret Wise Brown, I have never liked Goodnight, Moon. There, I said it. Please don’t hate me. Perhaps that is just one of the contributing factors to my delight in reading this clever parody. Parents and kids will get a chuckle out of this gem (clever author pseudonym, too).

We lost a true American hero recently in Neil Armstrong. All children should get to know about him and the other amazing astronauts that inspired countless people throughout the world. This book includes terrific illustrations by Mike Wimmer.

Can You See What I See?: On a Scary Scary Night: Picture Puzzles to Search and Solve

By Walter Wick 40 pages Children

Danny Says

Are you kidding me? I’ve never included a Walter Wick book on my lists? Yup, even I overlook masters, as Walter Wick’s books deserve a place in everybody’s libraries. His illustrations are to die for, and his books captivate all ages. He is truly one of my favorite children’s authors, and he is a blessing to any parent or teacher of a reluctant boy reader. This is a good one for Halloween.

How Rocket Learned to Read

How Rocket Learned to Read

Like Snoopy and Woodstock, Rocket and his little yellow bird teacher will win over kids and parents alike. What a wonderful story about piquing interest in reluctant readers about the wonders of reading.
The Thankful Book

The Thankful Book

By Todd Parr 32 pages Children

Danny Says

Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday in November, and most of us view it as a chance to gorge ourselves with friends, family and – in some cases – strangers. Parr’s simple picture book helps readers focus on what the holiday is truly about: giving thanks for all of our blessings.
Jubilee!

Jubilee!

By Karyn Tunks 32 pages Children

Danny Says

Every year my students and I “travel the United States” through literature by finding books featuring authors and stories taking place in all 50 states. For Alabama, we enjoyed this story of a young girl’s first trip to Fairhope in the 60s, where she witnesses her first “jubilee,” a cool natural event where various aquatic creatures wash up on shore. Inspired my students to take photos of some of the annual rituals that occur in their lives. Great illustrations by Julie Dupre Buckner.

Inspired by Tolkien’s The Hobbit, this tale of a remarkable “nibbling” adventure should resonate with anyone who has ever been picked on before. I like to use this book with elementary students to model how to write short and compelling chapter books.
