Hi folks!

I am on the road speaking a lot this June, which means I have carry-ons filled with books (no, I have not purchased a Kindle yet). This past month I focused on reading some of my favorite authors: Janet Evanovich, Sebastian Junger, Scott Turow and Greg Mortensen. I also began my annual crusade to read the Classics I fake-read in school (you know, Jane Austen does not have to fight zombies to be interesting). As I will be traveling to Ireland next month, I hope to finally find James Joyce to be readable. One longer book (370 pages) that I found to be fascinating was Merchants of Doubt by Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway (fascinating look at contrarian scientists).

I like books that make me smile, and while this book is a collection of his articles for Believer magazine, the entire book left me feeling like I had accomplished something by the end of only a couple of hours. In my mind Hornby is simply one of the most readable, funny and gifted authors around.

This one totally caught me off-guard with its wit and charm. When Alex dies with her dog in a car accident, she is thrilled to find out how great Seventh Heaven is but becomes distressed to discover she has to pass an entrance exam or risk being demoted to Fourth Heaven. Perfect beach reading.

If You're Not First, You're Last

With an extensive glossary and loads of pages for notes, this book reads more like a 180-page book, as I breezed through it on a flight from L.A. to New Orleans. The title sounds a bit negative, but Cardone is nothing but positive energy as he calls readers to action in selling themselves, no matter what their field.

I confess that I picked this book from the shelves because I thought it was a grammar book and wound up treated to a book that teen boys love. Great characters come together in a money-making scheme gone awry. Funny and touching at the same time.

Margaret Peterson Haddix is one of the most popular young adult authors in America, and the reason is because of her mastery to create realistic teen characters in realistic situations in much the way that filmmaker John Hughes managed to capture teen dilemmas during the 1980s. I use this book to inspire middle schoolers to write, especially as I have taught girls like Tish Bonner who sit in the back of the class and think they are too good for school.

I have my friend Annette Alpern to thank for this simple yet moving book about how all it takes is one brave soul to stand up to bullying. I use this book with business executives interested in team-building. Great for teaching preschoolers colors and numbers, as well.
