April 2017

Are you getting April showers? I’m predicting a bunch of April sunshine! Either way, it’s a great time to be catching up on your reading.

So, what are you reading? Anything you’d like me to check out? I’ve been covering a lot of territory lately, both geographically and bibliographically (if that’s a word). Airplane flights are the perfect time for me to read, and I’ve been on a lot of planes lately. My eclectic reading habits continue, thanks to so many recommendations e-mailed to me by lazy readers like you! Among my favorite longer reads this past month were Jay Asher’s eerie Thirteen Reasons Why, the simply marvelous second novel by Amor Towles – A Gentleman in Moscow (must read – but it’s 480 pages…you know what – count it as two books, and read it anyway), the always dependable Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology (by the way – if you ever find time to put down the remote to be truly inspired, watched his TED talk) and – at the behest of a friend who shall not be named – I forced myself to read the Kindle version of the very funny Kathy Cooperman’s Crimes Against a Book Club.

It may be a bestselling book, but I picked it up after my pal Tyra Thompson kept on pestering me to read it. What an amazing examination of growing up poor in the Rust Belt. Leaders of both the Democratic and Republican parties should take heed, as I was touched to learn more about a population that is quite misunderstood (I now have a better idea of why our country has reached the political crises I think we can all agree exists in this country between both parties).

Is your life a mess? I’m not talking just about your house. There’s a psychology to all of this, and Sullivan encourages readers to go with the FLOW. Delightful read that will help anyone feeling disorganized and guilty immensely.

I have always liked TNT’s lead NBA anchor Ernie Johnson, but I found so much respect for him with a heart-felt plea he gave to Americans following the 2016 Presidential election. Folks, there is a lot of noise in society right now. How about we try being respectful and listening to one another? Reading Johnson’s autobiography brought tears to my eyes, as he is truly an extraordinary and humble man – the kind I would love to have as my friend. Good to know there are still some really good people out there.

Clever, is the first word that comes to mind. I have to admit that this book surprised the heck out of me, which is one of the reasons I love people handing me books I know nothing about. Awesome book for English teachers who want to challenge their students with formulating “plotlines.” This book was truly a revelation for me.

Ninth graders Tyreek Vaughan (no relation) and Jamilla Grant insisted I started reading what I consider a brilliant graphic novel series by Vaughan, with amazing illustrations by Fiona Staples. Give me reluctant readers who likes comics, and I can guarantee they will dive deep and dive hard into this entire series.

Middle schoolers seem to be stuck in dystopian tastes nowadays, but this book straddles the worlds of science fiction and fantasy in a way that I have not seen since Neil Gaiman. I’ll definitely be reading the next book by Heather Hansen!

Full disclosure: I’m a sucker for beautiful illustrations, and David Walker’s pictures begged me to pick up this book. Paul does a wonderful job of introducing children to important sound words in this lovely book.
