Hi folks!

July was a tough month for my family. My mind has been elsewhere, and books have been my saving grace. Can I give you a reading tip? When you’re depressed, read funny and inspiring books. I’ve caught myself favoring books by Paul Reiser, Erma Bombeck, Dave Barry, Carl Hiassen and Douglas Adams, not to mention the occasional Paula Deen or Julia Child cookbook.

Bed: A Novel

This book is hilarious and touching at the same time, and I must confess I picked it up because it won the inaugural “To Hell with Prizes Award.” While you’ll laugh at Whitehouse’s clever one liners, there are many layers to this wonderful novel about the curious life of a morbidly obese young man who earns cult status as he remains in his bed for 20 years.

Not only is this a quick read filled with excellent tips – it is highly readable! I am astounded how much I enjoy reading this book. Some of the best business books I have read (most, in fact) clock-in at under 250 pages.

I think what I like most about Hahn’s sequel to Unenchanted is her ability to tell a compelling story with an interesting love triangle for teenage girls that does not focus on death and dreariness

365: A Daily Creativity Journal: Make Something Every Day and Change Your Life!

I am a huge fan of Sir Ken Robinson’s creativity revolution, and I have absorbed a number of wonderfully creative efforts like Scalin’s challenge to pick a theme and create daily projects around that theme for a year. Every teacher and parent should grab a copy.

The Book of Doing: Everyday Activities to Unlock Your Creativity and Joy

I found this book at the checkout stand at Kinko’s. Can you believe it? It was filled with large print, fun fonts and lots of doodles, so I had to buy it. It will take you an hour to read and months to implement. Another great way to encourage creativity.

Based largely on the research of scientist James Lovelock, this book is sure to spark interesting classroom discussions about global warming. Great way to teach students how to be respectful of one another’s divergent views.

Ling & Ting: Not Exactly the Same! (Passport to Reading Level 3)

Maybe since my children are half Chinese I am drawn to books about Chinese Americans. Then again, any beginning reader will enjoy Lin’s tales of twins who are not as alike as they may appear.

Binky the Space Cat (A Binky Adventure)

To me, the mark of a truly great children’s book is whether mom and dad laugh as much as the kids during the read aloud. This is a book parents will surely appreciate as they read to their little ones before bedtime.
