August 2017

August means a couple of things to me. For me it means that summer is nearing an end, and I will be traveling about 50,000 miles this month speaking back and forth across North America.

So, what are you reading? Anything you’d like me to check out? I enjoyed quite a few plane rides this past month, and by “enjoy” I mean that I got to read a ton of eclectic titles. It was a “retro” month for me, so I focused on oldies but goodies (see my adult picks below). For lengthier fare, I loved The Reagan Diaries (edited by historian Douglas Brinkley – did you realize Ronald Reagan was the ONLY President to keep a daily journal?) and Endzone by John Bacon (excellent writing, and a good read before college football season). Re-read Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole and The Shining by Stephen King, and treated myself to a couple of fun books by Jeffrey Archer and Ken Follett (two of my favorite authors).

This is the second month I am going to include several children’s and young adult book recommendations, as selected by students and teachers for ILA. The ones I will be including will feature those books that are under 250 pages that I have read (and the descriptions are courtesy of ILA). Click here for the complete 2017 ILA Reading Choices lists.

Anyhow, enjoy this month’s book selections below. I hope you are all reading some wonderful books. Make sure to tell me all about them. If you're an author or a publisher and would like to send me review copies of your book(s), please send them to the address listed for authors and publishers.
