The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership

By John C. Maxwell 336 pages Adult

I know, this sounds like an “academic” book, and I will admit that Maxwell sometimes delves into graphs. However, the majority of the book includes inspirational anecdotes about people from Harriet Tubman to Jaime Escalante. I read this book in three hours, and I now have a better clue as to who deserves my vote for President.

They Call Me Coach

Don’t let the page count frighten you, as there are a ton of appendices highlighting UCLA stats, etc. Even though I am a Trojan for a life, John Wooden is simply one of the most amazing and good people in the world. If we all live our lives half as well as this fine man, there is nothing to fear. I love Coach Wooden’s anecdotes and philosophies, and you have to give credit to a coach who finds the time to teach players how to put on their socks. One of the ten people alive that I would like to meet.

Destiny: From Paul Harvey's the Rest of the Story

Will you stop worrying about the page count? This book includes 103 two to three-page, real-life mysteries that are crafted with Paul Harvey’s marvelous touch. Any collection of Paul Harvey’s stories, gathered by his son – Paul Aurandt, is worth reading. How else would you learn about the dead jockey that won the Belmont Stakes or the hypochondriac who would be immortalized as the world’s most beloved nurse?

I just realized that I had not yet recommended this semi-memoir of the Nobel Prize winner’s experiences as a 15-year-old concentration camp survivor. If this book is not being recommended to high school students, there truly is something wrong with our school system.

Go Ask Alice

I remember debating if this book was a real diary or not when I was a teenager. Regardless, I’d say this is about as good of a book to discourage teenage drug use as any. It certainly freaked me out, and it has had the same effect on most of the middle schoolers who have endured me reading it aloud.

The Blue Day Book

Even if this book, filled with fun photographs and simple messages, only takes 20 minutes to read, it is one of the best pick-me-up books I’ve seen. I have my old roommate Adam LeVrier to blame for that, as he kept a copy on our coffee table for years.

The recent passing of the great actor Paul Winfield, who received an Academy Award nomination for his work in the film, made me think of this moving story about a sharecropper family’s resilience through all sorts of tragedy.

My good friend Bob Matulich gave my daughter this book on the day she was born, and it is a treat. A great reminder to all of us to keep our minds young and our smiles large.

One Grain Of Rice

Danny Says

First of all, I realized I neglected female authors on the list this month. Second of all, this book represents a great way to get students interested in the mathematical concept of compounding (I bet a young Bill Gates or Warren Buffett would have loved it). Third of all, I love the pictures and Demi’s lovely tale of a girl who outsmarts a raja and saves her village.

If Roast Beef Could Fly

Danny Says

I had to include at least one funny book on this month’s list, right? Jay Leno is one of the genuinely nice people in show business, and this is one of the genuinely good children’s books written by a celebrity (most stink).
