Can you believe we are already into February?

There’s nothing like getting under the covers and spending a lazy day behind a really good book. I’ve been up to my typical eclectic reading this past month, as I enjoyed everything from Roger Enrico’s The Other Guy Blinked to Isabel Allende’s A Long Petal of the Sea, Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson to One of Us Is Next by Karen McManus.

The more I read emails and letters, the quicker I realize the necessity for a thing called “grammar.” This classic is a treasure for its unique tone, wit and charm, which have conveyed the principles of English style to millions of readers. More importantly, I appreciate its brevity! Great teaching doesn’t have to be verbose.

There are not enough books written for children about peers with disabilities. It’s rarer still to find one that doesn’t focus the story on a character’s disability. That’s what made me truly appreciate this book and enjoy reading it aloud to students.

Rumple Buttercup has five crooked teeth, three strands of hair, green skin, and his left foot is slightly bigger than his right. He is weird. Join him and Candy Corn Carl (his imaginary friend made of trash) as they learn the joy of individuality as well as the magic of belonging.
