I hope you are all doing well and avoiding the flu (which I just battled). 

Enjoy the books.  My baby continues to inspire, and I am happily reading to her mommy and future sibling. We are currently enjoying Roald Dahl’s delightful Matilda.

I receive a ton of feedback about the Lazy Readers’ Club, and most of the comments come from women.  Many have asked for more romance-related stories, so I thought I would include this Pulitzer Prize winner that deals with a young Navajo couple’s budding romance.  I was most intrigued by the look at Native American life, especially since I attended junior high and high school near the Four Corners area.

A classic that is ideal reading for those of you who feel you are stuck in loveless marriages.  There are some pretty awesome twists in this romance, and I must admit I was quite engaged with the story.  Not the book to read if you want a pick-me-up, though.

The book is just a tad shorter than the title.  I figure that after reading Ethan Frome you may want to ask yourself how to make a relationship or dream work.  Ford lays out a pretty easy-to-understand roadmap to success for all areas of life.  I love self-help books like this.

This book could just as easily make a Young Adult reading list, as I have recommended it to plenty of high schools and heard raves (especially from girls).  I have to confess that I love Mary Higgins Clark, as her books always entertain and force you to read them straight through to the end.  The teachers at the first elementary school I worked at used to swap her books like trading cards.  I read her books out of sure pleasure.

I have found that this “Gossip Girl” series is practically addictive among middle school teens.  This is the latest in the series, and new readers may want to pick up the first episode to become familiar with these preppy New York teens.

One of the most popular books read by middle school girls in the schools I speak at.  Why?  They relate to the two young girls in the book and empathize with the struggles of the main character, a recent West Indian immigrant to Harlem named Phyllisia.

Bet you didn’t know that the greatest star in women’s soccer wrote a compelling kids’ book, did you?  This is a great book to show children the value of setting and pursuing goals, as well as the importance of learning teamwork and trying your hardest.  Mia’s transparent autobiography is a great tale for kids who need to learn a little more patience and a little less pouting.

I guess I must just face the fact that this month’s list is geared towards female readers (send requests, gentlemen).  I have read this touching tale to kindergartners, and they love the illustrations and story of this odd-looking little girl who never lets anything or anyone bring her down.  This is a great story for children who lack self confidence (e.g. most children).
