Hi Folks! 

Enjoy the books. I am currently reading a number of books about pregnancy and fatherhood (preparing for the big due date: Feb. 2nd). I did finish both the Lance Armstrong autobiography (It’s Not About the Bike – highly recommend) and A. Scott Berg’s biography of Lindbergh (one of the best biographies I’ve ever read; he’s a fantastic writer). I also may read a couple of scripts this month to pad my reading numbers and assist me when I enter my script (co-written with Adam LeVrier) to Project Greenlight.

I still do not know why Achebe never won the Nobel Prize for Literature, as he was one of Africa’s most gifted writers.  This book is for all those interested in blood, violence and suffering (or you could pick up a copy of your local newspaper any day).

A Man for All Seasons

A play in two acts, this masterpiece fascinated me, since I did not know anything about Sir Thomas More beyond Monty Python skits.  Paul Scofield is excellent in the movie version, by the way (for the laziest readers that become the most motivated Blockbuster patrons).

The Old Man and The Sea

While I am not a huge fan of Hemingway’s penchant for paragraph-long sentences (like the one I am trying to write right now), this is a fairly pleasing story if you just read it and do not search for all of its allegorical references.

The Little Prince

The Little Prince

By Antoine de Saint-Exupéry 96 pages Young Adult

Danny Says

This book falls in the upper elementary category, but it is a tale that is loved by all.  The author was a WWII pilot who died a year after the book’s release, and I discovered in the Lindbergh biography that Anne Morrow Lindbergh had a crush on Antoine.  Incidentally, this is the best-selling non-religious book of the 20th century (worldwide).

This is one of the best books I’ve ever read to students (or adults).  No matter what happens in life, there is nothing quite like friendship.  This is one of the most touching stories ever written, in my opinion.

If you want to get a jump-start on Halloween, this book is a load of laughs.  Friendship is also its theme, but this book has a happy ending.

Bizarre and brilliant, this beautifully illustrated book is a great stimulus for children’s curiosity.  Wiesner is to children’s books what Picasso was to art:  constantly challenging our notions of how things are supposed to be.  Watch out for flying frogs in the middle of the night!

September 12th: We Knew Everything Would Be All Right

Hate to end on a somber note, but this book is appropriate for this month.  This is a great book for teaching children about 9-11 on this, its second anniversary.  First graders wrote it, and all of us can learn from it.  Published by Scholastic, if you have a difficult time finding it.
