I am addicted to business parables, and Farber crafts easy-to-read books that provide lots of practical information people can use to improve their lives. I recommend all of his books.

Any books that follow John Wooden’s principles should be mandatory reading for all teachers and coaches. Former player Swen Nater’s personal story is amazing, and this wonderful guide (co-written by Gallimore, who is an amazing education researcher) provides insights into the teaching methods of “The Wizard of Westwood.”

Too many people – myself included – talk about their faith without representing it in their constant daily actions. The Shooks provide a great wake-up call for all of use seeking to “live-out” the gospel with our simple, daily actions.

One way to occupy students is to provide them with books like this one, filed with great brainteasers and riddles that will allow students to use the creativity they are restricted to use because of dull, mandated school standards.

Teenage boys – I particular – will enjoy this inside look at how the Navy Seals’ elite K-9 unit is trained. Particularly timely because of the popularity of American Sniper.

One of the primary reasons I believe in school uniforms is because of the outrageous cost of clothing for teens. For those who attend middle schools and high schools without such policies, Miller has created a very handy guide for fashion-conscious girls from budget-conscious families.

Great book for Black History Month, as Melba Pattillo shares here experiences as a 16 year old in 1956 trying to integrate Little Rock High. Fascinating story.

Yes, I guess I am trying to be ironic with this book, as the Northeast just got pounded with 2-3 feet of snow. I always enjoy stories seen through the eyes of children, and Jim LaMarche’s illustrations are absolutely beautiful.

This beautifully illustrated book is a perfect read aloud for those of us who love Maurice Sendak, as it blends the innocence of Little Bear and the adventure of Where the Wild Things Are in a wonderful tale of taking responsibility for one’s actions.

I know we are not supposed to teach students music or art anymore, but I like music and art and always try to find books that will attract my students to the forbidden subject of art. Your kids will get a kick out of this flip book that has lots of funny flips that bring art alive to students. Beware, though: this will be handled so much, it probably has a limited shelf life.
