Hi folks!

My office has become and airplane, and I find myself reading more than ever. Among the highlights this past month, I’ve enjoyed reading a couple of Vince Flynn novels, along with SuperFreakonomics by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner (the sequel to their enormously popular Freakonomics has some wonderful anecdotes and factoids), The Book of Genesis by R. Crumb (really cool graphic novel of the first book of the Bible) and Richard Castle’s fun Heat Wave.

While I enjoyed this gritty Philadelphia drug trade story, what drew me to the book was the author’s biography. From secretary to self-published author who created her own press, Teri Woods is an inspiration. I am so happy for her success, as this book is the first in a series.

Forty-four chapters, all around five pages or less with wry wit – I was in heaven devouring this book. Greenberg is an excellent writer, and I now intend to read a lot more of his books.

If you are going to pick up a self-help book, grab this one. The chapters are all about 2-3 pages long and filled with great quotes and anecdotes, which is all I ever look for in a book. Great exercises, as well.

A modern day Faustian tale about a 17-year-old named Joe “Faust” whose heroics on the basketball court and in the classroom prompt him to wonder if he truly made a deal with the devil. I liked this book because it caused a few boys to learn more about Faust.

I LOVED this book. Halpern’s debut is a quirky and – to me – hilarious story about a depressed teen committed to a mental hospital with a cast of wonderful characters.

I am a big fan of this book, as too many of the books I read to my Mexican-American students about Mexican Americans have to do with tamales. The pictures by Amy Cordova are lovely (the bright colors remind me of a Diego Rivera painting), and I enjoy the book as a little girl uses her imagination to think of different uses for her shawl. A beautiful book.
