Math Appeal: Mind-Stretching Math Riddles

Math Appeal: Mind-Stretching Math Riddles

By Gregory Tang,Greg Tang 40 pages Children

Danny Says

Using clever rhymes and fun illustrations, Tang again shows parents and teachers that math can be taught in an engaging way. He has come up with an even more engaging (and, cheaper overall) way to bring math alive with his new online math program at GregTangMath.com. I’m all excited because I came across a deal where users get $10 off this month with the code DB123. If you know anyone trying to make math fun and meaningful to their students, this is a gold mine!
Brodie & The Yeti , The True Tales Of Two Little Dogs

Brodie & The Yeti , The True Tales Of Two Little Dogs

By Dennis Robert Komick 34 pages Children

Danny Says

There are lots of “dog” books out there, but not many about the power of adopting unwanted dogs. This is a story that can be used by teachers and parents to address kindness to animals and the power of pet adoption (child adoption, too – for that matter).

Monsters Eat Whiny Children

Monsters Eat Whiny Children

By Bruce Eric Kaplan 40 pages Children

Danny Says

While I think Adam Mansbach’s Go the F**k to Sleep is pure genius, it is meant for an adult audience. Kaplan has written a book that makes adults laugh with their children while getting kids to pay attention to one of my biggest pet peeves: whining. This book is perfect for playful read alouds.

Take Me Out of the Bathtub and Other Silly Dilly Songs

By Alan Katz,David Catrow 32 pages Children

Danny Says

One of the best ways I know to engage students of all ages is to create parodies of well-known songs. Your kids will be tickled by Katz’s clever ditties and David Caltrow’s delightful illustrations, and don’t be surprised if you find yourself humming the tunes for the rest of the week.

Short and sweet (and I know Tomie dePaola needs no help selling books), this simple pop-up book has always been one of my favorites to capture the true story of Christmas.

I am excited about Vicki-Ann Bush, as I just completed reading a couple of her e-books for young adult series, The Dusk Chronicles. The Queen of IT is a great book to encourage kids to go out and “do something.”

This is a fun read aloud about families from around the world at a street market expressing their emotions in their languages. Sam the Ant - Glow in the Dark: Brillando En La Oscuridad

Sam the Ant - Glow in the Dark: Brillando En La Oscuridad

By Enrique C Feldman,Sam Sierra Feldman Children

Danny Says

This is what I call a "golden book," as it is written in English and Spanish. I love to recommend books like this to students, as many ESL parents are able to read the story aloud in Spanish (and, I believe, reading the English version actually improves their English). For my own children, we get a kick out of reading the story aloud first in English before reading it again in Spanish. Feldman always provides solid stories that teach values in an intriguing manner.
