Goodnight iPad: a Parody for the next generation

Goodnight iPad: a Parody for the next generation

By Ann Droyd 32 pages Children

Danny Says

With apologies to Margaret Wise Brown, I have never liked Goodnight, Moon. There, I said it. Please don’t hate me. Perhaps that is just one of the contributing factors to my delight in reading this clever parody. Parents and kids will get a chuckle out of this gem (clever author pseudonym, too).

We lost a true American hero recently in Neil Armstrong. All children should get to know about him and the other amazing astronauts that inspired countless people throughout the world. This book includes terrific illustrations by Mike Wimmer.

By Walter Wick 40 pages Children

Danny Says

Are you kidding me? I’ve never included a Walter Wick book on my lists? Yup, even I overlook masters, as Walter Wick’s books deserve a place in everybody’s libraries. His illustrations are to die for, and his books captivate all ages. He is truly one of my favorite children’s authors, and he is a blessing to any parent or teacher of a reluctant boy reader. This is a good one for Halloween.

Like Snoopy and Woodstock, Rocket and his little yellow bird teacher will win over kids and parents alike. What a wonderful story about piquing interest in reluctant readers about the wonders of reading.
The Thankful Book

The Thankful Book

By Todd Parr 32 pages Children

Danny Says

Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday in November, and most of us view it as a chance to gorge ourselves with friends, family and – in some cases – strangers. Parr’s simple picture book helps readers focus on what the holiday is truly about: giving thanks for all of our blessings.
Jubilee!

Jubilee!

By Karyn Tunks 32 pages Children

Danny Says

Every year my students and I “travel the United States” through literature by finding books featuring authors and stories taking place in all 50 states. For Alabama, we enjoyed this story of a young girl’s first trip to Fairhope in the 60s, where she witnesses her first “jubilee,” a cool natural event where various aquatic creatures wash up on shore. Inspired my students to take photos of some of the annual rituals that occur in their lives. Great illustrations by Julie Dupre Buckner.

Inspired by Tolkien’s The Hobbit, this tale of a remarkable “nibbling” adventure should resonate with anyone who has ever been picked on before. I like to use this book with elementary students to model how to write short and compelling chapter books.

With lovely watercolor illustrations by Evi Shelvia, this touching story will teach you how to appreciate the precious little time all of us spend on this Earth. If you can read this without crying, you’re tougher than me.

Danny Says

I love Turnage’s quirky characters and Southern humor, and I look forward to reading a lot more great books from her. She has set the bar high for herself, and all ages will breeze through this lovely tale.
The Cloud Spinner

The Cloud Spinner

By Michael Catchpool 32 pages Children

Danny Says

This magical story – with mesmerizing illustrations by Alison Jay – reminds me to pity those adults who do not regularly indulge in good childern’s books. If you’re only reading books written at “your age level,” you are ignorant of many of the world’s literary treasures. Catchpool has written a simple, beautiful story – the reason we read.
Titanic: Disaster at Sea

Titanic: Disaster at Sea

By Philip Wilkinson 64 pages Children

Danny Says

This is the kind of book that I loved when I was a boy, and I see scores of boys flocking around this one to share with their friends. Filled with beautiful illustrations, photographs and even a poster and fold-out diagram (yeah, good luck holding on to those), this book provides tons of interesting facts, tidbits and insights into an extraordinary tragedy that continues to fascinate people 100 years later. I’ve seen boys spend hours looking through this book.
Satch & Me (Baseball Card Adventures)

Satch & Me (Baseball Card Adventures)

By Dan Gutman 192 pages Children

Danny Says

Holy cow! I recently created a list of books for my friend to get for his fourth grade son, and after writing a few Dan Gutman titles I suddenly realized that I have never included him on a monthly picks list. What can I say – I figured everyone knew about Dan Gutman! He’s certainly one of the best writers to draw boys into books. This book about Satchel Page (one of my personal favorite baseball players) is just one in an awesome series of “baseball card” stories. Boys, and even some girls, DEVOUR these books.

Bill Grossman has a wonderful sense of humor, and your kids will get a kick out of this alphabet book that should leave Mom and Dad laughing at the rhymes and pictures as much as their kids.
