You Can Do It!

By Tony Dungy 32 pages Children

Danny Says

This month I speak at the International Reading Association’s annual convention in Orlando, Florida, and I am thrilled that Super Bowl champion coach Tony Dungy will be speaking there, as well. This book is pure Dungy, offering inspiration for all children searching for what they are good at, and the illustrations by Amy June Bates are lovely.
Interrupting Chicken

Interrupting Chicken

By David Ezra Stein 40 pages Children

Danny Says

As a father who has one daughter in particular who feels compelled to interrupt just about every bedtime story with a comment on every page, I loved this amusing and beautifully illustrated tale of a daddy chicken trying to get through some bedtime fairy tales with his inquisitive daughter.

My children get a kick out of this mischievous cat, and I have always enjoyed illustrations that blend photography with painting. A good bedtime read aloud.

Since we are on the subject of mischief, nobody does it better than Horrid Henry. Terrific read aloud with great illustrations by Tony Ross.

Danny Says

From 13 Sculptures Children Should Know to 13 Buildings Children Should Know, Wenzel has created a wonderful niche. She is filling in the gap left from schools ignoring art education, and this latest entry to the series will entice your students to ask more questions about art. A fabulous series.

Who needs an iPhone when you have this book? Tullet cleverly entices children to press “buttons” and see what happens. Kids are always engaged with this book.

50 American Heroes Every Kid Should Meet (2nd Revised Edition)

By Dennis Denenberg,Lorraine Roscoe 120 pages Children

Danny Says

There was an awful lot of negative news coming out of Washington this past month, and I’d like kids to focus on those individuals who make a positive difference every day. This is a great book to use for read alouds after breaks, as students sit riveted, and filled with questions.
13 Words

By Lemony Snicket 40 pages Children

Danny Says

I love teaching people about books that bring vocabulary words to life, and Lemony Snicket has made my life easy, as he shares my affinity for language. Along with Maira Kalman’s gorgeous illustrations, this book mirrors Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events by misleading readers to think they are in for a sad tale, only to find a happy ending. Magnificent.
For the Love of Soccer!

For the Love of Soccer!

By Pelé 32 pages Children

Danny Says

All it took was the Women’s World Cup to get me interested in soccer again. Besides the U.S. women, Pelé sparked my interest in the sport, and I am delighted to see that he has begun writing children’s books to share that passion.

The best part of the Fall is the return of football, and the worst part is the dwindling days of baseball. No worries, as this comprehensive guide will tell your kids everything they ever needed to know about the “first” America’s game.
The Astonishing Secret of Awesome Man

The Astonishing Secret of Awesome Man

By Michael Chabon 40 pages Children

Danny Says

Chabon amazes me with his versatility as a screenwriter (Wonder Boys), Pulitzer Prize-winning scribe (The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay) and now – children’s author. Specifically, he knows how to write in a way that gets guys interested in reading with his wonderful wit and, in this case, Jake Parker’s terrific illustrations.
Grandpa Green

Grandpa Green

By Lane Smith 32 pages Children

Danny Says

You read it here first: congratulations to what should be the Caldecott winner for this year. I have always loved Lane Smith – his collaborations with Jon Scieszka are legendary (in fact, he won a Caldecott for the rioutous The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales), and while I have always loved Smith’s sense of humor, Grandpa Green might be his best. Readers of the hilarious Robert Munsch (author of the witty The Paper Bag Princess and the tear-jerker Love You Forever) may observe that while both author/illustrators were known for their funny books, the one they will be forever remembered by are their touching, personal stories.

Danny Says

I have been inundated with requests for recommendations of “math storybooks” recently (and I have been scouring bookshelves to help my own children), and I’d be remiss if I did not mention any of the great titles by Greg Tang. I came across a great deal for this month only, so I am featuring three of Greg’s most popular titles. He has just created an online math program with animated books, games and his revolutionary new puzzle KAKOOMA! Take a test-drive: GregTangMath.com. During October, get $10 off with the code DB123.
Math-terpieces: The Art of Problem-Solving

Math-terpieces: The Art of Problem-Solving

By Greg Tang 32 pages Children

Danny Says

I especially enjoy this book because Tang teaches math through art (that subject that is never discussed in schools anymore). Again, if you are looking for great ways to make math fun for your child, check out Tang’s new online math program at GregTangMath.com. This month you can get $10 off with the code DB123, a terrific deal for teachers and parents.
