The Rifle

The Rifle

By Gary Paulsen 112 pages Young Adult

Danny Says

Whenever parents tell me they have a boy who hates reading, I tell them two words: Gary Paulsen. In this story, a treasured rifle passed down through generations is the cause of a tragic accident. With subtle mastery and precision, this tough, thought-provoking novel challenges the idea that firearms don't become instruments of destruction and murder until they are placed in human hands.

American Born Chinese

American Born Chinese

By Gene Luen Yang 240 pages Young Adult

Danny Says

Can’t believe it took me this long to include this wonderful graphic novel with a hodgepodge of memorable characters, from Jin Wang, who starts at a new school where he's the only Chinese-American student to Danny, an all-American boy whose obnoxious Chinese cousin Chin-Kee's annual visit is such a disaster that it ruins Danny's reputation at school. Each of these characters cannot help himself alone, but how can they possibly help each other? A great story about never forgetting who you are.

Yellow Flag

By Robert Lipsyte 258 pages Young Adult

Danny Says

Kyle Hildebrand comes from a family of legendary NASCAR drivers. His older brother, Kris, is the heir apparent to the family business and shows great promise. Kyle, meanwhile, is seemingly content to play trumpet in a brass quintet. After Kris is injured, Kyle takes his place behind the wheel and proves himself to be a skilled and savvy driver, and he questions if he should pursue his interest in music or turn to racing. Lipsyte taps into the ever-growing popularity of NASCAR with this effort. As usual, he is at his best when conveying the high-octane sports details, filling readers in on what it is like to be in the middle of a race, as well as the other elements of the NASCAR life, from the sponsors that need to be schmoozed to the ever-available groupies. Fans of the sport will love this and hope for more installments of Kyle's story.

Zom-B

Zom-B

By Darren Shan 192 pages Young Adult

Danny Says

I’d be remiss not to include at least one zombie book for the month of Halloween. This first book in a series of a dozen titles is a great way to entice teens who like The Walking Dead to pick up a book. Teachers will love this book because they include a bigoted hooligan that will make a great segue for discussions on racism and bullying.

Not sure how I’ve managed to leave this book off previous lists, as it is one of my “go-to” books. Hilarious tale of a rebellious boy sent to a home-schooling program run by “the Applewhites,” a kooky, loud and outrageous family. Wonderful book. Needs to be in every classroom library.
