One Potato, Two Potato

One Potato, Two Potato

By Cynthia DeFelice 32 pages Children

Danny Says

With wonderful illustrations by Andrea U’Ren, this Irish retelling of the classic Chinese tale is great for teaching students about the value of compounding interest, something all of us would like to see in our bank accounts again. A funny interactive read aloud.
The 10 Most Phenomenal Athletes

The 10 Most Phenomenal Athletes

By David Suchanek 48 pages pages Children

Danny Says

Let me just say that I LOVE this book, and I know most boys who have any interest in sports (which includes most boys) and many girls will, too. Great facts, great pictures and – best of all – the book does not just judge athletes solely for their merits on the field but looks at their exploits off the field, as well (translation: you won’t find any jerks in these pages). Part of a great series from Scholastic.

Let's Look at Winter

Let's Look at Winter

By Sarah L. Schuette 24 pages Children

Danny Says

Co-titled “Veamos el invierno,” this is what I call a “golden book,” as it is part of a series of books written in English and Spanish (kind of a good idea, considering demographic shifts in our schools).
Flamingo Sunset

Flamingo Sunset

By Jonathan London 33 pages Children

Danny Says

Sometimes I just have to include a book for the illustrations. Yes, Jonathan London’s text presents a moving tribute to the life of flamingoes, but the extraordinary illustrations by Kristina Rodanas make this book a treasure for any library.
Bad to the Bone

Bad to the Bone

By Lucy A. Nolan 66 pages Children

Danny Says

Another in the delightful series of two dogs, Down Girl and Sit. Down Girl narrates her adventures with Sit as they deal with obedience school and proffer important advice like “ cats and squirrels are dangerous” and “dogs need attention.” Kids get a giggle, and they especially enjoy Mike Reed’s illustrations.
Super Zero: Zinc Alloy

Super Zero: Zinc Alloy

By Donald Lemke 40 pages Children

Danny Says

Part of the funny Zinc Alloy graphic comic novel series, this episode follows Zack Allen as he constructs his very own robot suit to combat noogies and super-slimy wet willies.
Hieroglyphs

Hieroglyphs

By Kremena T. Spengler 24 pages pages Children

Danny Says

Great introduction to the history of “picture writing” and how to crack different writing codes. Also provides some fun writing activities for kids.
A Fuzzy-Fast Blur

A Fuzzy-Fast Blur

By Laura Purdie Salas 24 pages Children

Danny Says

I want to encourage parents and teachers to utilize poetry as a way of enhancing students’ reading abilities. Combine poetry and pets and you get two great motivators that are sure to interest students in reading. Besides having a variety of great poems about different kinds of pets, this book uses several different styles of poetry, from acrostics to cinquains.
The Outfoxed Fox

The Outfoxed Fox

By Tim J. Myers 32 pages Children

Danny Says

When a young fox offers an idea to stop a hunter from trapping foxes, an elder fox brushes the idea aside as being too simple. But later the elder fox learns that there is something to be said for simplicity. A simple tale that younger students appreciate for its message that all ideas should be considered, regardless of who they come from.
Ladybug Girl and Bumblebee Boy

Ladybug Girl and Bumblebee Boy

By Jacky Davis 40 pages Children

Danny Says

The sequel to the popular Ladybug Girl, this fun book follows Lulu as she encounters Sam on the playground. Both seem to like the opposite of one another until Lulu suggests her Ladybug Girl game, which allows them to save the playground from hairy monsters and mean robots. Lots of fun to read aloud with little ones.
My Lucky Day

My Lucky Day

By Keiko Kasza 32 pages Children

Danny Says

Little kids find this book hilarious, as it chronicles how a hungry fox gets trumped by a clever pig. Pig shows up at fox’s door, but before fox eats the pig, pig suggests that fox bathe the filthy pig, feed him to fatten him up, etc. By the time the fox is done preparing his “dinner,” he is exhausted, and the happy pig leaves bathed, well-fed – get the picture?
The Warlord's Beads

The Warlord's Beads

By Virginia Pilegard 32 pages Children

Danny Says

Set in ancient China, this story shows how a young boy’s father must inventory all of a warlord’s treasures. Frustrated by not enough toes and fingers to count with, he creates what turns out to be a primitive abacus with strings and beads. Great book for teaching math.
Listen to the Wind

Listen to the Wind

By Greg Mortenson 32 pages Children

Danny Says

Yup, that Greg Mortenson. This beautifully illustrated book by Susan Roth retells Mortenson’s fantastic story of life through the eyes of Pakistani children made famous in his book Three Cups of Tea. Precisely the kind of story I want more children to read in order to develop greater compassion for others.
A Fish Out of Water

A Fish Out of Water

By Helen Palmer 72 pages Children

Danny Says

This book, written in the 60s, holds a special place in my heart, as it is one of my son’s and daughter’s favorite books to read aloud. True, the version we own is in French and English, so the kids are entertained by my French accent. I think all kids can appreciate this story of a boy who feeds his fish too much and spends the rest of the book trying to find a place to store his ever-growing pet.
Let's Do Nothing!

Let's Do Nothing!

By Tony Fucile 40 pages Children

Danny Says

buy this book! It reminded me a lot of The Cat in the Hat, as it follows two boys who have done everything there is to be done who now try to do ten seconds of nothing. Great illustrations, and a delightfully silly story. My kind of book.
